WR Stick N Out is a quick-hitting man beater out of Pistol Tight Slots that pairs a stick concept to the closed side with a boundary out and a deep crosser to the open side. The backside receiver runs a shallow drag/crosser combo with two stacked out breaks near the numbers, while the play side shows a stick route pairing a corner-breaking route with an out, and the halfback releases into a swing/flare route underneath. Protection is a standard five man slide, and the primary progression starts with the stick concept read (out versus corner sit) before working backside to the shallow crosser and finally to the checkdown swing route to the halfback.
Defensive Reads
Watch for cornerbacks lined up tight in press man alignment presnap, since the stick concept and out routes are designed to win quick separation against man coverage. If the slot defenders are sitting at a deep depth off the line, that signals zone coverage and you should prioritize the crossing route over the stick. Key the flow of the linebackers after the snap, since a fast trigger toward the stick concept opens up the backside crosser sitting in the vacated zone. Beware of user controlled defenders sitting in the shallow crossing lane or jumping the out route breaks, which are common lurk spots against this concept. This play struggles against tight zone coverage with underneath defenders sinking hard, since the stick and out routes have limited room to separate without a natural pick or rub.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap motion or check the alignment of the slot corners to confirm man coverage before snapping, since the stick concept punishes off man and blitz-heavy fronts. If you see a two high shell with soft corners, hot route the stick to a flat route or bump the halfback swing to an angle route to attack space quicker. Against zone heavy defenses, prioritize the deep crossing route on the backside since it settles in soft spots between the linebackers and safety. Pair this play with Stick Spacing or Mesh from the same set to keep defenders guessing between quick game and drag concepts. Best called on early downs or third and short to medium since the routes develop quickly and give the quarterback a fast rhythm throw versus a delayed blitz look.
