This is a run play with no route concept, so the primary read progression is the HB reading the pulling linemen: press the counter step to sell backside flow, then follow the puller through the alley and cut off his block based on how the linebackers flow.
Defensive Reads
Key the backside linebacker flow first, since disciplined defenders who stay home and scrape over the top can string this play out before the pullers get set. Watch the defensive line gap alignment pre-snap: if the defense is shaded into the play side gaps, the counter action loses its advantage because there is no natural cutback lane. Man coverage shells with off ball linebackers who bite on run action are the most vulnerable, since the counter step and pulling linemen create hesitation that opens the alley. Look for a fast flowing Mike linebacker or a blitzing off ball defender coming downhill immediately after the snap, as this is the primary defender who can beat the pullers to the hole and kill the play in the backfield. Stacked fronts or heavy blitz packages with numbers advantage in the box shut this down quickly, since the counter blocking scheme needs extra time to develop that a fast interior blitz does not allow.
Usage Tips
Run this out of Pistol Tight Slots on early downs when you want to keep defenses honest against play action out of the same personnel and formation look.
Check the box count pre-snap: if the defense has six or more in the box with no extra safety rotation down, this is a tough matchup, so consider checking to HB Dive or Inside Zone Split instead.
Watch for the strong side linebacker or edge crashing hard down the line pre-snap, since that flow directly into the counter action can blow up the pulling blockers before they reach the point of attack.
Pair Counter Y with PA Post Shot from the same set since both start with similar backfield action, forcing linebackers to hesitate on run flow and opening up the shot play down the field.
