Read Option out of Pistol Open Flex is a true zone read run play with the QB and HB mesh point set behind the offensive line, giving the QB a give or keep decision based on the backside defensive end. The line blocks a standard zone scheme, flowing to the play side while the QB reads the unblocked edge defender to decide whether to hand off the dive or pull it and attack the edge himself. This is primarily a run play designed to gash defenses that crash hard on the dive or fail to respect the QB keep, and the primary read progression is: identify the backside DE crash, give to the HB if he attacks the QB, keep it yourself if he sits on the dive.

Defensive Reads

Watch the backside defensive end pre-snap alignment, if he is lined up wide and undisciplined he is a candidate to crash on the dive every time. Post-snap, key the linebacker depth, shallow linebackers who fly downhill on the mesh point open up cutback lanes for the HB. This play struggles against disciplined scrape exchange defenses where the DE sits and a linebacker or safety is assigned to spy the QB keep. User the defensive end yourself in competitive play to take away both options manually, forcing the offense to live with whatever numbers advantage exists elsewhere. Watch for a nano blitz look off the edge, since that removes the read entirely and forces a fast decision or a loss on the play.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, check the box count and see if the defense is playing with an extra run defender in the box, since that tells you whether the numbers favor the dive or the keep.

Look for aggressive defensive ends that crash hard on HB dives in earlier reps, since that is a signal they will bite again and open up the QB keep lane.

Use this on early downs and short yardage situations where the defense expects a straight run and may not respect zone read discipline.

Pair this with PA Boot Rt or PA Boot from the same set so the defense has to respect both the run action and the play action rollout out of the same Pistol look.

If defenders are keying the mesh point every snap, mix in HB Dive or Inside Zone Split from the same personnel to keep the read honest without exposing the QB.
