Inside Zone Split is a base zone run play out of Pistol 11 personnel with the HB split to a Pistol depth stance behind the QB. The offensive line executes a zone blocking scheme, stepping in unison to the play side to create combo blocks at the point of attack and wall off backside pursuit, while the TE and WRs are not shown running routes and instead work to seal the edge or occupy defenders. The primary read progression is the frontside gap combo to backside cutback lane, letting the HB press the hole and react off the double team leverage rather than a predetermined designed hole.

Defensive Reads

Watch for a stacked box with eight defenders in the box pre-snap which signals a run blitz designed to beat inside zone at the mesh point. Identify if the defense is running a bear front or overloaded front since that alignment removes the natural cutback lane this play relies on. Look for linebackers cheating downhill immediately after the snap which indicates the defense is keying run and will fill gaps before the zone blocks can develop. Man coverage on the perimeter with no extra run support in the box is the ideal shell to attack since it leaves the frontside gap combo blocks clean. Watch for a slanting defensive line to the play side since this can beat the zone blocking scheme by shooting gaps before linemen can climb to the second level.

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap and only run this into light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the run fit to avoid a stacked front eating the play. Use the left or right trigger to manually load a lead blocker into the correct gap if you see a linebacker flowing hard downhill at the mesh point. This play works best on early downs like first and ten or second and short when defenses are not selling out on the pass. Pair it with PA Boot Rt or Read Option out of the same Pistol Open Flex look to keep defenses honest since the run action mirrors the same initial steps. Use hit stick or truck stick sparingly here and instead trust the natural cutback since the zone blocking is designed to create a cutback lane if the frontside gets clogged.
