PA Boot Rt is a play-action rollout out of Pistol Open Flex 11 personnel that pulls the quarterback to the right edge on a boot fake. The route concept features a deep vertical clear-out on the far right, a corner/out breaking route from the inside slot receiver working underneath the vertical, and a deep crossing route from the backside receiver that stretches the field horizontally all the way across the formation. The blocking scheme sells run action to the play side before the QB rolls out, giving him a run pass option feel with the flat route as the checkdown. Primary progression starts with the corner route breaking to the sideline, then works to the deep crosser sitting down on the opposite side, with the flat route as the emergency valve.
Check the flat and curl defender depth pre snap, if they are sitting shallow expecting the run, the boot action will pull them out of position and open the corner route. Identify single high versus two high safety shells before the snap, since single high defenses are more vulnerable to the deep crosser sitting in the vacated intermediate zone. Watch for a hard edge blitz or contain rush from the play side defensive end, which can disrupt the boot timing and force the QB to speed up his read or check down early. Look for a user controlled defender sitting in the shallow crossing lane, since a lurking linebacker or safety can jump the deep cross if the QB holds the ball too long. Cover 3 with a fast flowing linebacker to the flat is the toughest shell to attack here, while Cover 2 or man coverage with poor edge contain tends to give up the most explosive gains on this design.
Use this on early downs or first and ten when defenses are keying run out of Pistol formations, since the play fake and rollout punish overaggressive linebackers and safeties crashing downhill.
Read the flat defender pre snap, if he widens with the boot action the corner route will sit in the void behind him for an easy pitch and catch.
Roll the QB fully outside the tackle box before throwing to maximize the play action window and to give yourself a run threat if the coverage is sound, since this is a boot with legit scramble equity.
Combine this with PA X Slant and PA Double Post from the same set to keep defenses guessing between rollout boots and standard drop back play action out of the identical Pistol Open Flex look.
Against man coverage, prioritize the deep crossing route since it creates natural separation from trailing defenders working through traffic, especially against off man or bump techniques.
