HB Zone Wk is an inside zone run out of Pistol with 11 personnel, using a weak side zone blocking scheme where the offensive line flows to the weak side of the formation while the HB reads the natural cutback lanes. The TE and tackle wall off the front side while the play is designed to hit through the A or B gap depending on how the defensive front slants. This is a run play, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, and the primary read is a one cut, downhill decision based on the flow of the defensive line and second level fill from the linebackers.
Defensive Reads
Watch for defensive tackles slanting hard to one gap since that creates the cutback lane the HB is designed to exploit. Key the middle linebacker depth and flow, if he overpursues to the strong side the cutback read opens up immediately. This run struggles against gap exchange fronts or defenses running a hard edge contain package that keeps a defender home on the backside. Look for safeties creeping into the box pre-snap, a heavy box with eight defenders can shut down inside zone concepts by out-numbering the blockers. Post-snap, watch for a user-controlled linebacker flying downhill on a run blitz key, since that can blow up the zone timing before the HB reaches the line of scrimmage.
Usage Tips
Check the defensive front pre-snap to see if the line is shading to the strong side, since this play is designed to attack the weak side gaps for a cleaner lane.
Use the left stick to manually press the HB into the correct gap rather than relying on the CPU logic, especially against stacked fronts.
This play works best on early downs like first and second and ten when defenses are more likely to sit in base run fits instead of loading the box.
Pair HB Zone Wk with Read Option and PA Boot from the same Open Flex set to keep linebackers honest and force them to respect the edge and the play fake off similar formation looks.
