Breakdown
PA Boot fakes the handoff out of Pistol then boots the QB away from the play fake, giving him a rollout with a full-flow read. The backside receiver runs a deep crossing route all the way across the field, the near receiver breaks off a comeback toward the sideline, the TE releases into a quick out in front of the rolling QB, and the front side receiver clears vertically up the numbers. Blocking flows toward the fake to sell run action, and the progression works comeback to TE out to the deep cross, giving the QB a levels read as he moves outside the pocket.
Defensive Reads
Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they crash hard on the run fake this play should hit its window quickly against man or zone. Key the flat defender and corner on the near side, if they sink with the comeback route the TE out route underneath becomes open. Identify single high versus two high safety shells before the snap, a two high shell threatens the deep crossing route with late help. Look for a user linebacker spying the QB rollout lane, this defender can undercut the TE out route or force an early checkdown. Recognize edge pressure or a contain rush defender crashing down, this can collapse the boot lane and force the QB to throw off platform early.
Usage Tips
Run this out of a run-heavy personnel look so the play fake actually holds linebackers and safeties for a beat.
Use it on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage when defenses are keyed to stop the run.
Check the near flat and comeback route first since it is the quickest developing throw if the corner bites on the fake.
Hot route the deep crosser into a dig or drag against zone shells if the far safety sits deep and takes away the corner route.
