HB Stretch out of Pistol Open Flex is a zone run play that sends the offensive line laterally toward the play side, asking the HB to press the edge before deciding to bounce outside, bend into a cutback lane, or hit the crease created by the stretch blocking. This is not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, it is a run play designed to attack overaggressive fronts and gap discipline breakdowns by stretching defenders horizontally before the ballcarrier makes a vertical cut. The primary read progression for the HB is playside edge first, then the frontside double team, and finally the backside cutback lane if flow gets washed too far outside.
Check the defensive end and outside linebacker leverage before the snap, if they are crashing hard inside the bounce lane will be wide open. Identify the play side safety depth, a safety sitting in the box or cheating down signals run support that can erase the cutback lane. Watch linebacker flow after the snap, if the Mike and Will linebackers overrun the stretch action the backside cutback becomes the primary path for the HB. Beware of user-controlled defenders spying the HB or sitting in the backside gap, this is the main lurk threat that kills the cutback read. This play struggles against gap exchange fronts and disciplined 4-3 under fronts that keep contain defenders home, since those alignments take away both the bounce and the cutback simultaneously.
Use pre-snap motion or a quick alignment check to see if the defense shifts its front toward the stretch, since a slanting front can shut down the bounce lane immediately.
Look for light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box before the snap, this play thrives against nickel and dime personnel that are light up front.
Hot route the TE to a fold or arrow release only if you need extra edge protection against a wide 9 technique or overhang blitzer, otherwise leave the blocking assignments stock.
Pair HB Stretch with PA Boot Rt or PA Boot from the same set so the play-action rollout sells the same lateral flow the defense just saw on tape, forcing linebackers to hesitate on run fits.
Save this play for early down situations like first and ten or second and short, since the stretch concept needs room to bounce outside and loses value in short yardage or obvious passing downs.
