The three down linemen and Jack linebacker set the front while the two off linebackers and five defensive backs fall into their zone drops, reading the quarterback's eyes rather than mirroring specific receivers. This is a zone beater killer disguised as a coverage play: it holds up against deep shots and stretches the field horizontally, so the primary read progression for the defense is flowing from the deep half safety keying the number two receiver's vertical release, down to the underneath linebackers wall off crossers and crossing routes.
Read the safety alignment first, if both safeties are showing depth past ten yards you are likely getting a two high shell that this coverage exploits against vertical shots. Watch cornerback press versus off alignment, off corners signal true zone drops while press alignment can bait you into thinking man coverage is coming. Key the linebacker depth at the snap, shallow drops mean they are sitting on quick game and hooks, deep drops mean they are helping bracket seam routes. This shell gets beaten by quick option routes and RPO bubble screens that attack the flat before the underneath zone defenders can rotate, so user control a linebacker to jump those throws. Motion the offense's number two receiver pre-snap to identify if the defense is rotating to a true quarters look or staying in a two high shell, this tells you whether to bail into the deep zone or trigger downhill.
Use the flexibility of the Jack linebacker to spy mobile quarterbacks or rush off the edge, then hot route him into coverage if you diagnose a bootleg or rollout coming.
