Breakdown

Cover 3 Sky is a zone defense out of the 3-3 Wide Jack Nickel package that drops the strong safety into the box as the "sky" run support defender while three deep defenders split the field into thirds. The corners and free safety hold deep thirds while underneath defenders sink into curl to flat and hook zones, giving you five underneath defenders plus three deep. This is a zone beater against man beater route concepts and a solid answer versus outside runs since the sky safety fills the alley quickly. Primary read progression starts with the deep thirds: key the quarterback's eyes to bait him into the deep middle third where your free safety sits, then work down to the flat defenders to close on any quick game or RPO throws underneath.

Defensive Reads

Pre snap, identify if the offense is running a trips or bunch look to that side, since Cover 3 Sky can be vulnerable to flooding one third with three receivers. Watch the running back release out of the backfield, if he leaks out to the flat that is the sky safety's primary run key and also a quick check down throw the flat defender must react to. Post snap, key the quarterback's shoulders to identify if he is attacking the deep middle third, since that is the free safety's responsibility and the biggest lurk threat area for user pick sixes. This shell struggles against quick slants and speed outs thrown before the underneath defenders finish their zone drop, so watch for hitch and out combos designed to beat soft zone corners. Cover 3 Sky gets exposed by four verticals if the deep third defenders bite on double moves, so user the free safety and stay disciplined reading the number two receiver's vertical stem before committing.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs when you expect run or play action since the sky safety adds a fast extra body against outside zone and stretch runs.

Use this on third and medium to third and long when the offense shows tendencies toward deep shots, since the three deep defenders take away go routes and deep comebacks.

Pre snap, check if the offense has a single high safety look or empty formation, if you see empty consider audibling to a blitz like Nickel Blitz 3 instead since Cover 3 Sky can be thin against five out patterns.

Combine this with Cover 3 Buzz Match or Cover 3 Match in your play calling sequence so offenses cannot distinguish spot drop Cover 3 from match coverage looks, this disguises your rotation and keeps user quarterbacks guessing.

Hot route your flat defenders slightly wider if you see bunch or stack formations to prevent easy pick routes from creating an uncovered flat defender.

Use user control on the deep middle third defender to jump any dig or post route since the CPU can be late getting over the top on those crossers.
