Cover 4 Palms is a defensive coverage call out of the 3-3 Wide Jack Nickel package that uses a quarters shell with a two-read (palms) technique on the outside. The cornerback and safety on the tagged side read the number two receiver: if number two releases vertically the corner sinks into a deep quarter while the safety rotates down, and if number two runs to the flat the corner squats and the safety plays the deep quarter alone, essentially playing a two-man game to eliminate flat-to-corner and smash concepts. The primary read progression for the defense is corner to safety on the call side, keying the release of the slot receiver to decide between fast flat robbing and traditional quarters drop, while the backside stays in standard quarters rules with underneath defenders sinking to wall off in-cuts and dig routes.
Read the release of the number two receiver on the palms side first, a quick out or flat breaking route triggers the corner to squat and the safety to rotate into the deep quarter alone. If number two pushes vertically, the corner should sink to the deep quarter and the safety rotates down to help, taking away seam and post routes that usually torment single high looks. Watch out for offenses that run mesh or shallow drag concepts underneath, since the linebackers in this shell have to react fast to crossers or the middle of the field opens up. This coverage is vulnerable to quick game concepts that attack the flat before the corner and safety can complete their two read exchange, so expect trouble against fast motion combined with snag or spot concepts. Against play action, keep discipline with your linebackers reading run fits first, since palms can be exploited if the second level bites too hard on run action and leaves the underneath zones exposed to boot action throws.
Call this on early downs or third and medium when you expect the offense to attack the flat with bunch or slot fade smash concepts, since palms technique is built to squeeze that exact combo. Pre-snap, identify if the offense is showing a stack or bunch to the palms side, that alignment tips their intent to run smash or a quick out and gives you confidence in the call. User the safety on the palms side and be ready to jump the flat route the instant you see the number two receiver break outside, since a well timed jump can bait the QB into a pick six. Pair Cover 4 Palms with Cover 4 Quarters and Cover 4 Zone in your play calling mix so the offense cannot key on the two read technique and starts guessing between a true quarters shell and the palms rotation. Avoid this call against heavy vertical stacks or four verticals concepts unless you trust your deep half defenders, since the rotation can be slow to get depth if number two releases vertically right at the snap.
