Breakdown

Cover 9 Show 2 is a disguised coverage out of the 3-3 Wide Jack Nickel front that shows a two high safety shell pre-snap before rotating into a match coverage shell that plays quarters principles on the backside and man match to the strength. This is a defensive play designed to bait quarterbacks into throwing behind the disguise, giving you Cover 2 iso reads for the corners while the deep safeties bracket vertical routes and rotate down into a robber zone. The primary read progression for the defense is to identify the number two receiver to the strong side, since the flat defender and the underneath match defender key on that release before working to the number one receiver's vertical stem.

Defensive Reads

Watch the quarterback's eyes and pre-snap motion checks, since Cover 9 Show 2 is built to punish audibles or hot routes aimed at what looks like a soft two deep shell. This coverage is strong against deep out and corner routes to the number one receiver because the match rules have the outside cornerback sitting on top once the release declares vertical. It is vulnerable to quick game and RPO game underneath if the offense recognizes the late rotation and throws hitches or slants before the coverage settles, so be ready to user a linebacker up into a passing lane. Key the number two receiver's release to the strength of the formation first, since that dictates whether the underneath defender sinks into a hook zone or matches man to man on a vertical stem. Look for trips or bunch formations that stack two receivers to one side, since that can overload the match rules and create a natural hole in the flat if your underneath defenders misread their assignment.

Usage Tips

Show the two high safety picture as long as possible before the snap to freeze the quarterback into thinking he has a Cover 2 beater dialed up, then let the disguise rotate late so he commits to a throw that the match rules take away.

Use this on third and medium to third and long when opposing offenses are hunting for seam shots or deep out routes against what they perceive as a two deep shell.

Pair this call with straight Cover 2 Match and Cover 2 Invert in the same set so your pre-snap look stays identical possession after possession, forcing the offense to guess whether the coverage is truly staying two high or rotating away.

User the underneath match defender to the strong side number two receiver and trust your zone drops on the backside, since the coverage rules are already built to funnel throws into your close defenders.

Mix in Cov 3 Buzz Match WK and Cover 3 Buzz Match from the same personnel group to keep the same Nickel 4-2-5 picture on early downs while disguising three deep rotations behind the same two high shell.
