Underneath, the two inside defenders sink to hook and curl zones while the corners squat on the flats, with the four-man rush getting up the field to force the quarterback off his first read. This is a zone defense designed to bait quick throws into the flats and hook zones, then rally to close on anything thrown short of the sticks.
Defensive Reads
Watch the offensive formation pre-snap for stacked or bunch receivers to the same side, since that can overload one flat defender in this coverage. Key the quarterback's eyes at the snap, because Tampa 2 is vulnerable to sit routes and speed outs thrown quickly before the flat defenders can settle into their landmarks. If the offense runs four verticals, trust the Mike linebacker's deep drop to wall off the middle seam and squeeze any inside vertical release. Watch for corner routes and deep out breaking routes attacking the void behind the flat defenders and in front of the deep safeties, since that intermediate window is the classic Tampa 2 beater. This shell shuts down deep middle throws and slot fades but can be exploited by quick game concepts and well timed play action rollouts that pull the underneath zone defenders out of position.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs or obvious passing situations where you expect the offense to attack the deep middle, since the Mike linebacker's deep drop is the whole point of this coverage. Pre-snap, identify if the offense is running four verticals or any deep post concepts, because the Mike's zone drop is designed to rob that exact throw. Use your user-controlled defender to spy the Mike linebacker's drop initially, then flow to whichever route combo threatens the seam or the deep hole behind him. Pair this call with Tampa 2 Drop and Cover 2 Man from the same set to disguise your shell before the snap and keep opposing quarterbacks guessing between true zone drops and man coverage under a two deep look. Avoid this call on third and long against trips formations, since the flat defenders can get outnumbered and the seams get stressed if the underneath zones do not sink fast enough.
