Breakdown

Cover 3 Sky is a three deep, four under zone coverage out of the Nickel 3-3 Odd front. The two outside cornerbacks and the deep safety run vertical zones splitting the field into thirds, while the strong safety rotates down to play the sky (outside curl/flat) role, with the nickel and linebackers dropping into underneath zones to wall off crossers and flat routes. This is a zone beater shell rather than an offensive play, designed to defend against route combos that attack the flat and intermediate middle, so the primary read for the defense is to identify the number two receiver to the strength side first since the sky safety has flat responsibility there, then work backside to the curl and hook defenders underneath.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check the strong safety alignment since he is the one rotating down into the flat as the sky defender, and if the offense trips receivers to that side you need to be ready to widen your zone. Post-snap, key the number two receiver's release since flat routes and quick outs to the sky side are the first thing to eliminate before working your eyes to the deep third. This shell is vulnerable to floods that put three receivers into one deep third since the single deep defenders can get outleveraged, so watch for stacked or bunch releases attacking one side. It shuts down quick game and flat concepts because of the extra underneath defender, but if a user drops the hook defender too deep, dig routes and shallow crosses can pick up easy yards over the middle. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they sit too shallow expect voids in the intermediate seams for the offense to exploit.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs or ahead of the sticks when you expect a run or short to intermediate pass since the underneath four defenders squeeze the middle of the field. Use pre-snap motion checks to confirm the offense is not overloading one side with three receivers, since the sky safety has to cover the flat alone on his side. Pair this with Cover 3 Cloud or Cover 3 Buzz Mable in your play-calling sequence so quarterbacks cannot key on the same safety rotation every snap. User the deep middle third defender to jump any dig or post route since that safety has help underneath from the hook defenders. Mix in Cover 3 Match from this same set on third and medium to disguise the sky rotation while still playing similar landmarks.
