3 Buzz Sting Press is a Cover 3 Buzz zone coverage call out of the 3-3 Odd Nickel front with press alignment on the outside corners. The diagram shows both outside cornerbacks bailing deep into thirds, a safety buzzing down to the underneath middle hole while the other safety rotates over the top, and two zone defenders sinking into the intermediate hook and curl areas. Up front the line stunt sends the interior rushers on a cross action while the linebackers drop into short zone drops, giving this play the look of a five man rush with a disguised stunt behind a three deep, four under zone shell. The primary read progression for the defense is to buzz the underneath flow first, then trust the deep thirds corners to eliminate vertical shots while the stunt occupies blockers up front.
Pre snap, check the corner alignment for press technique and look for the safety cheating toward the box, since that safety is your buzz defender flowing to the underneath middle. This coverage beats man beater double moves and mesh concepts because the buzzing safety and hook zone defenders take away the shallow crossing routes that man corners usually struggle with. It is vulnerable to quick flat routes and speed outs thrown before the underneath zones fully develop, since the press corners are focused on the vertical threat and can be late to react to short throws in front of them. Watch the interior line stunt post snap: if the offensive line picks it up cleanly, the stunt rushers lose their advantage and the quarterback gets extra time to find seams in the buzz zone. Identify any lurking user controlled defender sitting in the intermediate zone before the snap, since that defender can jump underneath routes and bait the quarterback into a turnover if the route concept crosses through that area.
Call this on early downs or third and medium when you expect the offense to test the middle of the field with crossers or dig routes, since the buzzing safety clogs that throwing lane. Disguise the coverage by lining up like a standard Cover 3 and delay the safety buzz action until just after the snap so quarterbacks cannot key it pre snap. Use the press corners to slow release stick and speed out concepts, forcing the quarterback to hold the ball longer for the line stunt to get home. Pair this call with Cover 3 Sky and Cover 3 Cloud in the same set so you can show the same initial shell but rotate the flow defender to different spots, keeping the offense guessing on where the buzz or cloud defender is coming from. Sequence it after a base Cover 3 Match call to bait the quarterback into throwing into the same look, then hit them with the line stunt pressure when they expect a clean pocket.
