Breakdown

Double Bracket is a man coverage blitz look out of the 3-3 Odd Nickel package, sending three defenders on blitz paths (shown by the red arrows) while committing to man coverage across the back end. The three underneath rushers attack downhill to collapse the pocket quickly, forcing the quarterback into a fast decision before the double bracket coverage on the outside receivers can be tested vertically. This is a man beater blitz designed to win with pressure up front while daring the offense to win one on one on the perimeter, so the primary read progression is get after the quarterback first and trust the bracket defenders to hold up on any deep shot attempts.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the offense is running max protect or empty backfield, since max protect can pick up all three blitzers and leave your bracket corners isolated too long. Watch the running back and tight end alignment, if they check release into routes instead of blocking, your interior blitz can get picked up and the play loses its pressure advantage. Post-snap, key on any hot route or quick out from the slot, since the bracket coverage is vulnerable to rub routes and pick concepts that create natural separation against man defenders. This blitz shuts down teams that rely on quick game and rhythm throws, but struggles against elite offensive lines that consistently win one on one blocking reps against your three rushers. If the quarterback starts rolling away from the blitz side immediately, the coverage bracket loses integrity and you need a spy or contain rusher to prevent scramble yardage.

Usage Tips

Call Double Bracket on third and medium to third and long when you expect the offense to sit in empty or spread formations and need a quick negative play. Check the receiver splits before the snap, if you see stacked or bunch formations, be ready to hot route your bracket defenders to avoid getting picked or rubbed off the release. Use this as a change up after showing Cover 3 Sky or Cover 4 Quarters looks earlier in the drive, since the pre-snap shell will look similar but the blitz timing punishes any hesitation from the quarterback. Pair it with Corner Blitz 3 and Overload 3 Sky Press in the same set to keep the offense guessing on which gaps are getting the extra rusher. Avoid calling this against heavy play-action teams on early downs since the blitz can be vulnerable if the offensive line picks it up clean.
