Defensive Reads

Watch for the outside receiver's release against the bailing corners, because Cover 9 gives up cushion on quick outs and hitches if the corner opens too early. Key the flat defender's positioning before the snap, since his width tells you whether the defense is prepared for a bunch or trips concept to that side. Post snap, track the underneath linebackers' zone drops closely, as any hesitation in their drop creates a window for shallow crossers or spot routes to sit down in soft spots. This call is vulnerable to play-action rollouts and RPOs that attack the flat defender's wide alignment before he can react, so be ready to user him early if you see run action combined with a bubble screen or quick flat route.
Usage Tips
Call Cover 9 on early downs when you expect the offense to test the flats or run mesh and crossing concepts, since the underneath defenders are numbered up to jump those throws. Use pre-snap motion to confirm the offense is running man beaters like slants or drags, because Cover 9 zone drops are built to sit on those routes and bait the quarterback into a hard read. Combine this call with Cover 3 Sky or Cover 3 Cloud in the same set so quarterbacks cannot key hash marks or safety depth to diagnose the shell before the snap. Audible the flat defender's width if you see a heavy trips or bunch set to the field, since the diagram shows him aligning wide and needs an extra beat to reach shorter stick routes.
