Breakdown

Cover 4 Quarters out of the 3-3 Odd Nickel package is a four deep, three under zone shell built to blanket the field vertically while keeping numbers to defend the run. The diagram shows both outside corners and both safeties dropping to deep quarter zones, with the two hook/curl defenders sinking underneath and the nickel defender working an intermediate flat drop off the line. This is a zone based defense, not a blitz or man scheme, designed to take away four vertical shots and deep in cuts while forcing the offense to work the underneath middle of the field first.

Defensive Reads

Pre snap, check safety depth: if both safeties are sitting at 10 to 12 yards with corners playing off, you are almost certainly seeing this Cover 4 Quarters shell or something similar out of the 3-3 Odd Nickel. Post snap, key the number two receiver to your side; if he releases vertically past 8 yards, the safety on that side should carry him deep while the corner squeezes the number one receiver. Watch for switch releases and rub routes from bunch or stack formations, since these concepts create natural picks that can beat the outside quarter defenders in this zone. This call gets exposed by quick game and RPO concepts underneath because the shell prioritizes deep coverage, so watch out for stick and slant flat combos attacking the short middle before your underneath defenders can settle. Man beater route combos with option routes against linebackers in the shallow zone can also find soft spots, so user the middle hook defender to jump likely option breaks if you read run pass option action.

Usage Tips

Use this call on early downs or any situation where you suspect a vertical route concept or four verts shell from the offense.

Pre snap, identify if the offense is stacking receivers or running trips, since Cover 4 Quarters can get stressed by natural picks and rub routes against the outside quarter defenders.

Hot route the underneath hook defenders into tighter curl zones if you are worried about digs and crossers settling in the soft spots between levels.

Pair this call with Cover 3 Cloud or Cover 3 Sky on the next snap so quarterbacks cannot key your safety depth and start attacking the flats with confidence.

Best used on second and long or third and long when the offense is likely to take a deep shot, since the four deep shell removes explosive play risk over the top.
