Stretch is an outside zone run out of I Form Slot Stack with 21 personnel, showing the HB aligned behind the FB in a classic I backfield with an offset lead blocker. The offensive line flows laterally in unison toward the play side, reaching and running defenders horizontally to create a cutback lane, while the FB leads through the hole to pick up the first threat off the edge. The primary read progression starts with the play side edge defender to determine bounce, bang, or bend, then works inside to the FB's block and the backside cutback lane if the frontside gets strung out.
Watch for stacked box fronts with linebackers cheating toward the play side, this is the biggest indicator the defense is sitting on outside zone and will string the run out. A hard crashing edge defender or a scraping Mike linebacker flowing fast to the play side signals you should key the cutback lane instead of forcing it outside. If the defense shows a heavy run blitz with extra defenders stacked near the line, this play can get blown up quickly since zone blocking needs time to displace defenders. User-controlled defenders flowing down hard to spy the FB's lead block often leave the backside cutback wide open, so read for that overpursuit. Two high safety shells with light boxes are the easiest look to attack, but if you see a single high safety rotate down as an eighth man in the box before the snap, be ready to cut this play or check to a different call.
Run Stretch on early downs when the defense shows a light front or is playing a two high shell that leaves fewer defenders in the box. Read the play side edge defender first, if he crashes hard down the line bounce it outside off the FB's lead block, if he sits and squeezes bend it back inside. Use pre-snap motion or a formation shift to identify whether the defense is a run blitz or base front before the snap so you know if you need to check to a quick pass. Pair Stretch with Jet Sweep and PA Jet Sweep from the same set to keep linebackers honest on outside flow and open up cutback lanes on future Stretch calls. Mix in HB Blast or HB Iso after a few Stretch reps to punish defenses that start overplaying the edge with their linebackers.
