PA Jet Sweep out of I Form Slot Stack sells the jet motion fake across the formation before releasing three vertical stretches downfield. The yellow route breaks outside and up the sideline after a jab step, the red route runs a deep dig back across the middle from the opposite side, and the blue route releases from the backfield, works flat then climbs the seam up the sideline. This is a play-action shot play built to hit big zone beaters over the top once the linebackers and safeties bite on the run fake, with the primary read progression starting on the deep out breaking route (yellow), checking down to the crossing dig (red), and finishing with the seam route out of the backfield (blue) if the top of the defense is cleared out.
Defensive Reads
Watch for linebackers stepping up hard on the jet motion at the snap. That flow confirms they are biting on the fake and opens throwing lanes over the middle for the dig route. Key the free safety pre-snap. If he is aligned in the box or creeping down to support the run, the deep out and seam routes will have a soft spot behind him. Cover 3 with an overaggressive flow to the run side gets gashed by the crossing dig route since the middle zone defender vacates. Man coverage with no safety help over the top gets beaten by the deep out route (yellow) if the corner bites on the underneath jet fake. Watch for a delayed blitz off the edge disguised as run support. If the outside rusher stays home instead of crashing on the jet sweep, the quarterback needs to get the ball out quick to the flat or dig before pressure arrives.
Usage Tips
Run this on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short) when defenses are keyed on stopping the run to sell the jet sweep fake convincingly.
Check the safety alignment pre-snap. Single high safety shells are prime targets since the deep out and seam routes attack the boundary once the free safety commits to the run fake.
Pair this play with actual Jet Sweep and Zone Fake Jet from the same Slot Stack set earlier in a series so the defense starts keying run and bites on the play-action here.
If you see a two-high shell rolling down hard to the run side pre-snap, hot route the dig route (red) into a deeper post to attack the vacated middle of the field.
Use max protect or check your protection against nano blitzes since the play takes time to develop with the jet motion sell and deep breaking routes.
