HB Blast is a downhill power run out of I Form Slot Stack with 21 personnel, showing the fullback leading through the hole with the halfback taking the handoff and following straight north into the A or B gap. The offensive line uses a power blocking scheme, with the fullback isolating on the first linebacker in the box while the line down blocks to seal running lanes. This is a pure run play with no play-action or pass options attached, and the primary read is the fullback's block: the ball carrier keys the FB's lead block and picks the gap the FB opens rather than reading second or third options.
Defensive Reads
Watch for a stacked box with the middle linebacker sitting tight behind the fullback pre-snap, this signals the defense is ready to fill the A gap immediately and can blow up the blast for a minimal gain. Look at safety depth before the snap, if both safeties are shallow or one is in the box in a run-support look, the blast will struggle to break past the second level. Man coverage on the perimeter with no extra run support usually means this play can pick up steady gains since the fullback only has to beat one linebacker. Key the linebacker's shoulder lean at the snap, if he flows hard to the fullback's side without hesitation the defense has likely called a run blitz or gap exchange designed to stop this exact concept. Heavy blitz packages with edge defenders crashing inside can still get home quickly, so avoid calling this against known all-out blitz tendencies on short yardage downs.
Usage Tips
Run this against light boxes with six or fewer defenders to give the fullback a clean isolation block on the second level. Check the pre-snap alignment of the middle linebacker, if he is stacked directly behind the fullback the blast will hit the exact gap he vacates once blocked, so patience is key before accelerating. Use HB Blast on short yardage and goal line situations where you need a north-south gain and do not want to risk negative plays from stretch or jet sweep concepts. Pair it with HB Iso in your play-calling sequence since both plays share the same initial mesh point look, forcing linebackers to hesitate on run fits later in the series. Sprinkle in PA Dagger or PA Jet Sweep off this same personnel grouping to punish defenses that start crashing down hard on the blast look.
