Zone Fake Jet is a play-action pass out of I Form Slot Stack that disguises a jet motion run fake before working into a boot-style passing concept. The diagram shows the fullback releasing vertically as a check release or seam option while the backside receiver runs a shallow crosser underneath, and the two stacked receivers on the play side work a vertical stem into a route breaking toward the sideline off the fake jet motion. The primary read progression starts with the flat or wide route created by the jet fake, then moves inside to the crossing route underneath the box, and finally checks down to the fullback if the play side is capped.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment over the play side, a single high safety cheating toward the boot side signals zone coverage that can be attacked with the crossing route sitting down in the void. Watch the linebackers at the snap, if they immediately flow hard to the jet motion side and bite on the run fake, the crosser underneath will come open quickly against man or zone. Identify if a cornerback follows the stacked receivers in man coverage, this confirms man beater potential for the vertical stem route breaking to the sideline. This play struggles against disciplined zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4 where linebackers stay home and do not honor the run fake, since the boot lane gets clogged and the crosser has no space. Watch for a user-controlled defender sitting in the shallow zone or spying the quarterback on the boot, this lurk threat is the biggest post-snap key that can bait a turnover if the fullback or crosser is thrown into it.
Usage Tips
Send the jet motion pre-snap and watch how the defense reacts, if a defender follows the motion man across the formation you are almost certainly facing man coverage and should lean into the boot flow away from that defender.
Use this play on early downs after establishing the actual Jet Sweep run from this same set, the run fake sells much harder once the defense has respected the sweep on tape.
Hot route the shallow crosser into a deeper dig if you are facing zone coverage with linebackers sitting short, this gives you a bigger throwing window against zone beaters.
Pair this call with PA Jet Sweep and HB Iso in the same series to keep linebackers guessing on run fits, then hit them with this boot concept once they start crashing downhill.
Best used on second and short to second and medium, situations where defenses expect run and are more likely to bite on the jet fake, opening up the flat and crossing routes.
