Jet Sweep out of I Form Slot Stack (21 personnel) is a pure run play built to get the motion man the edge in a hurry. The slot receiver goes in jet motion across the formation and takes the handoff, with the offensive line and lead blocks flowing to seal the edge as the ball carrier presses the sideline behind the arrow. This is not a play-action or RPO look, it is a straight sweep designed to beat overpursuing linebackers and zone defenses that flow slowly to the flow of motion. The primary read is the edge: get width first, then decide whether to bounce outside the last block or cut it up if the alley closes.
Defensive Reads
Key the play side outside linebacker and defensive end pre-snap, if they are crashing hard down the line the edge will be soft and this play hits big. Watch for a user-controlled defender spying the jet motion, a good player will trail the motion man across the formation and blow up the timing of the handoff. Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells with linebackers reading run fits aggressively can shut this down if the second level flows fast enough to beat the blockers to the edge. Zone defenses that are slow to react to motion, especially base 4-3 or 3-4 fronts without a designated edge setter, are the most vulnerable to this concept. If the safety rotates down pre-snap to add a body to the edge, expect the alley to be clogged and the ball carrier will need to cut it up inside quickly.
Usage Tips
Snap the ball right as the jet motion crosses the formation so the defense cannot fully diagnose flow before the handoff hits.
Use this against defenses that show heavy inside blitz looks or stacked boxes, since the edge speed punishes fast interior pressure that overruns the play.
Pair Jet Sweep with PA Jet Sweep and Zone Fake Jet in the same set to force linebackers to freeze on run fits, then hit them with the fake once they start crashing.
Best called on early downs or in short yardage on the perimeter where defenses are not expecting outside speed, and avoid it on obvious passing downs where the defense can sit on the run.
If the defense shows a hard edge set from the defensive end or a fast flowing linebacker, hot route the fullback or lead blocker to adjust the kick out angle before the snap.
