HB Iso from the I Form Slot Stack set is a straight downhill power run play designed to hit between the tackles behind a lead blocker. The fullback leads through the hole to isolate and take on the first inside linebacker he sees, clearing a running lane for the halfback. This is a run play, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, and the primary read progression starts with the fullback lead block, cutting off his hip based on which way the linebacker flows.
Defensive Reads
Watch linebacker depth pre-snap, stacked or crashing linebackers signal a run blitz that can beat this play at the mesh point if you do not adjust protection. Check safety alignment, a single high safety with the box loaded suggests man or a run-committed front, which favors the offense if the fullback wins his block. Post-snap, key the play side linebacker's first step, if he flows hard to the fullback's block the cutback lane behind him opens up. This play struggles against gap-sound fronts with disciplined defensive tackles who hold their gaps and force the fullback to lose his block. User-controlled defenders shooting inside gaps or spying the mesh point can blow this play up quickly, so be ready to bail to a passing concept if you see that pre-snap.
Usage Tips
Use HB Iso on early downs in run heavy personnel packages to establish tempo and set up your play-action game later in the drive.
Check the defensive front pre-snap, if you see a light box with only six or fewer defenders in the box, this play has a much higher upside.
Pair HB Iso with PA Dagger and Zone Fake Jet out of the same Slot Stack set so the defense has to respect the run fake before those passing concepts hit.
Trust your fullback lead blocker and stay patient, let the hole develop instead of forcing the cut immediately at the mesh point.
