PA FB Flat out of the I Form Hulk set (22 personnel) sells the play-action fake to the backfield before releasing the fullback into the flat as the No. 1 route, giving the quarterback a quick, high-percentage outlet underneath. The X receiver runs a deep out breaking toward the sideline off a vertical stem, stretching the defense horizontally and vertically off one concept. This is a play-action man and zone beater built around the FB flat as the primary read, with the deep out as the alert if a linebacker or nickel corner widens too aggressively and opens a throwing lane behind him.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is stacking the box in a run-stopping front, since that alignment is exactly what this play-action concept is designed to exploit. Check safety depth before the snap: two-deep shells suggest zone underneath defenders may be baited by the run fake, opening the flat and deep out. Post-snap, key the play-side linebacker or flat defender immediately after the snap fake to see if he steps up to fill the run gap or stays disciplined in coverage. Watch for a user-controlled defender sitting in a shallow zone or lurking near the flat, since that is the primary threat to this play's main read. Man coverage with linebackers assigned to the fullback is a soft spot for this concept, but disciplined zone linebackers who do not bite on the fake can shut down the flat route and force a checkdown or throwaway.
Usage Tips
Sell the play fake by holding the snap read momentarily so linebackers bite on the run action before you attack the flat with the fullback.
Use this on early downs or in run-heavy personnel situations (2nd and short, 1st and 10) when defenses are stacked to stop HB Dive, HB Iso, or HB Power O out of this same Hulk set.
If the defense shows Cover 3 or Cover 4 with linebackers sitting in underneath zones, hot route the fullback to a quick flat and take the checkdown before the zone defender can drive on it.
Against man coverage, watch for a linebacker matched on the fullback and rely on the play fake to gain leverage and separation immediately off the line.
Pair this play with HB Dive and HB Counter Wk earlier in a drive to condition the defense to bite on run keys, then dial up PA FB Flat to punish overaggressive run fits.
