HB Power O out of the Hulk I Form (22 personnel) is a gap-scheme run play designed to pull a guard and kick out the edge defender for the HB to follow behind. The diagram shows the FB leading through the hole with the pulling guard, while the HB takes a slight lateral step before pressing downhill into the B or C gap created by the double team and kick out block. This is a pure run play built to overpower the front seven, and the primary read progression is: identify the kick out block on the edge defender first, then read the FB lead block to decide between bouncing outside or cutting back inside the pulling guard.
Watch the defensive end and Sam linebacker alignment pre-snap, if they are shaded outside the tackle the play has a natural cutback lane. Linebacker depth matters, if the Mike is stacked tight behind the nose tackle expect a quick fill and consider bouncing the run outside instead of forcing it inside. This play struggles against gap-exchange stunts or scrape exchange blitzes where the DE crashes inside and a linebacker fires outside to string it out. Man coverage shells with an extra run defender near the box (Cover 1 robber) tend to clog the cutback lane, so key the FB's block to decide bounce versus press. If the user controls a linebacker and flows hard downhill pre-snap, expect them to shoot the gap, so be ready to cut back away from the user defender's pursuit angle.
Run this out of 22 personnel when the defense shows base or heavy fronts to exploit numbers advantage in the box.
Check the alignment of the defensive end and OLB pre-snap, if they are crashing hard down the pulling guard has a clean angle to kick out.
Use the FB as your visual key, follow his shoulders since he will adjust his lead block based on where the second level flows.
Pair this with HB Iso and FB Dive from the same set to keep defenders honest on downhill run fits without changing your formation tendency.
Best called on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and medium) when you want to establish tempo and set up play action shots like PA Cross later in the drive.
Avoid this play against heavy blitz looks with fast flowing linebackers unless you can hot route the FB to adjust his block angle.
