Breakdown

FB Dive out of the I Form Hulk set is a straight downhill run play designed to hit the interior of the defensive line in a hurry. The diagram shows the fullback taking a direct hand off and pressing hard through the A gap, with the offensive line blocking down while the halfback stays in the backfield as a lead blocker option before releasing on his own path. This is a base run play, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, and the primary read progression is simple: identify the first crease at the A gap and if it is clogged, bounce to the nearest open gap based on linebacker flow.

Defensive Reads

Watch for linebacker depth at the snap. Linebackers sitting shallow and square to the line signal they are keying the run, which can shut this play down quickly. Look for a nose tackle or defensive tackle shaded directly over the center, since a two gap defender there can clog the dive lane before the fullback gets moving. This play beats light boxes and defenses in nickel or dime personnel that are not stacked for a power run look. It struggles against heavy fronts like 46 or Bear fronts where extra defenders are stacked inside the tackles. Post snap, key on whether the linebackers flow hard to the play side gap. If they overcommit, a cutback lane may open even though the design intent is a straight dive.

Usage Tips

Use FB Dive on short yardage and goal line situations where you need a quick, decisive gain without exposing the play to a big blitz.

Check the box count pre snap. If the defense has six or more defenders stacked in the box, consider audibling to HB Iso or PA FB Flat to punish the aggressive front.

Pair this play with HB Power O and HB Counter Wk in your play calling sequence to keep linebackers guessing between an interior dive and misdirection runs.

Since the fullback commits immediately, avoid calling this against defenses showing a heavy blitz look with linebackers crashing downhill before the snap.

Use FB Dive early in a drive to set up PA Cross later, since selling the dive action makes the play action pass hit harder off the same backfield look.
