HB Iso out of the I Form Hulk set is a power run play that sends the fullback straight downhill through the hole to lead block for the HB, isolating the play side linebacker. The line blocks straight ahead with double team potential at the point of attack while the HB reads the fullback's block and picks his gap off that lead. This is a run play designed to move the pile between the tackles, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, and the primary read progression for the HB is to press the hole, key the FB's block on the play side backer, and cut off that lead into whichever crease opens.
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is stacked with an extra run defender in the box or showing a nickel/dime look, since light boxes are where this play hits hardest. Watch linebacker depth: if the Mike is sitting back off the line reading the fullback's path, expect him to fill the hole quickly and you may need to bounce outside. Beware of a user-controlled linebacker flowing down hard on the mesh point, as this is the single biggest counter to HB Iso and can blow up the play before the FB even connects. Look for run blitzes or A-gap stunts from the defensive line, since a well-timed blitz off the edge or interior can beat the double team before the fullback gets to the second level. Cover 1 or Cover 3 with an extra man in the box tends to shut this down, while two-high shells with fewer box defenders leave more room for the HB to break through the crease.
Use HB Iso on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short when you want to establish inside run tempo and set up your play-action shots later in the set.
Check the box count pre-snap: if the defense has six or more in the box with two deep safeties this play can get clogged, so audible to HB Power O or HB Counter Wk to attack the edges instead.
Against base 4-3 or 3-4 fronts with linebackers playing downhill, this is one of your best gap-schemed runs since the FB neutralizes the Mike and lets the HB attack the crease.
Pair HB Iso with PA Cross or PA FB Flat later in a drive once you have shown the iso look enough to get backers creeping up, since the play-action off the same backfield action can freeze them for explosive gains.
User the fullback if you are worried about a blitzing linebacker beating the block, and manually steer him into the correct gap for a cleaner path for your HB.
