Breakdown

HB Counter Wk out of the I Form Hulk set is a weakside power run that pulls blockers away from the initial flow to gash the backside of the defense. The diagram shows the offensive line stepping down to the strong side while a puller wraps around to the weak side, with the FB leading through the hole to seal the edge and the HB taking a counter step before pressing the weakside gap. This is a pure run play designed to attack an over shifted front, and the primary read is a one cut progression: press the counter action to hold the linebackers, identify the pulling blocker's kick out or lead block, then explode through the weakside crease off the FB's shoulder.

Defensive Reads

As the defense, key the offensive line's initial step: if the play side guard and tackle step down hard, expect a counter and stay disciplined instead of flowing with the fake. Watch for the pulling blocker crossing the formation, this is the tell for HB Counter Wk, and a fast flowing linebacker or user controlled defender can beat the puller to the hole and blow up the play. Stacking the weakside edge with an extra defender or setting a linebacker to spy the backside gap takes away the cutback lane before the HB commits. This play struggles against aggressive gap shooting defensive tackles and 3-4 fronts that get penetration before the puller arrives, since there is no time for the blocking scheme to develop. Man coverage on the backside with a fast pursuing safety in the box is the best answer, since it eliminates the natural cutback lane and forces the HB to bounce outside into pursuit.

Usage Tips

Use this against defenses that are flowing hard to the strong side or stacking the box on early downs, since the misdirection punishes overaggressive linebacker pursuit.

Watch pre-snap for weakside safety rotation and slanted defensive lines, since a 3 technique or 4i to the weak side can blow up the pulling lineman's path before he gets to the hole.

Hot route the FB into a lead block if the CPU shows a run blitz look, and consider motioning the HB pre-snap to check the defensive front's reaction before the snap.

Pair this with HB Power O and HB Iso from the same Hulk set to keep the defense guessing between strongside and weakside gap runs, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their run fits.

Best called on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short) or in short yardage situations where defenses are more likely to sell out on the initial flow and get caught by the counter step.
