DB Blitz out of the 2-3 Single Mug set in Dime brings a five-man pressure package, sending both outside defensive backs off the edges along with a slot corner off the mug alignment while the interior four hold their gaps in a zone shell behind. The two outer X defenders crash off the corners as the primary rushers, the two inside square defenders and the mug threat over center hold underneath, and the far X on each side drops or spins to cover the deep middle. This is a blitz-heavy pressure call designed to overload the tackles with speed off the edge and create a fast home run pressure look rather than a coverage-first defense.
Pre-snap, identify the offensive tackles and tight end alignment, since a tight end staying in to chip disrupts your edge rush timing and forces you to abort the blitz mentally. Watch for quick game concepts like slants and hitches, since this blitz sacrifices underneath coverage and can get picked apart before the rush arrives. Key the running back's alignment, if he is set to the play side of your rush lane he becomes a check release blocker who can pick up your edge defender, so consider looping the rush to the opposite side. Post-snap, feel for max protect looks or seven-man protection, that tells you to bail the blitz mentally and just play the deep middle honestly since pressure will not get home. Look for empty backfield or bunch formations pre-snap, these spread the rush lanes thin and let receivers win quickly against the light underneath coverage this call leaves behind.
Call this on third and long or in two minute situations when you need a negative play or a coverage sack to force a punt or incompletion.
Check the offensive personnel pre-snap and only fire this when you see 11 or 10 personnel without extra blockers, since a sixth blocker can pick up both edge rushers and gash you.
Use the mug defender at the second level as your green dot user and spy the quarterback if you see a mobile passer, since the edge rushers can be beaten by a scramble.
Pair this with Cover 1 Robber Press earlier in the series so the offense respects man coverage, then dial up DB Blitz to catch them off guard with a different rush lane on the same down and distance.
Avoid this call against empty formations or trips looks, since the numbers advantage shifts to the offense and your edge rushers get isolated on quick releases before they reach the quarterback.
