The diagram shows both outside cornerbacks and the middle safety dropping to deep thirds while the buzz safety sinks from depth into an underneath zone, with the two inside linebacker types and the show blitzers dropping into short zones instead of rushing. This is a zone beater defense designed to hold vertical shots to one deep third while flooding underneath with four zone defenders, and the primary read for the defense is to key the quarterback's eyes and jump any in cut or curl route working into the buzz defender's landing spot.
Defensive Reads
Watch the outside receiver splits pre-snap, tight splits usually signal quick game or bunch concepts that attack the underneath buzz zone. Post-snap, key the running back release, since check releases into the flat are the first target against this four under shell. This shell is vulnerable to deep out and comeback routes thrown to the boundary before the corner can sink into his deep third. It shuts down drag and crosser combinations because the underneath defenders squeeze inside to trap in cut breaks. If the quarterback stares down the buzz defender's zone, user that defender manually and jump the route for a pick six opportunity.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap motion to see if the buzz defender rotates down early, that tells you if it is true Cover 3 or a disguised man look.
Show blitz alignment from the two down defenders can bait quarterbacks into thinking pressure is coming, hold this call on third and medium to force a hitch or checkdown.
Hot route the flat defender's landing zone underneath if the offense is running quick outs, since the buzz safety cannot cover the whole width of the field alone.
Pair this call with Cover 1 Hole or Cover 4 Palms from the same set so offenses cannot key blitz versus zone based on personnel or splits.
Spy the middle of the field with a user linebacker on mobile quarterbacks since the deep middle third leaves a natural throwing window if the safety bites on the buzz route.
