This is a zone coverage snap, not a blitz-heavy pressure call, and the primary read progression starts with the deep middle third to confirm the safety's positioning, then works to the flat and curl zones underneath as receivers settle in against the sinking linebackers.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify if the offense is running four verticals or deep crossers, since this call is built to bracket the deep middle and outside thirds against those concepts. Watch the running back and slot receiver releases immediately after the snap to see if they threaten the shallow flat zones the underneath defenders are sinking into. This shell struggles against quick out and hitch combinations to the boundary where the flat defender has to cover a lot of ground in a short window. Key the middle linebacker's drop depth, since if he sinks too fast on his zone assignment it opens a throwing lane in the intermediate middle for a seam or dig route. Against play-action, stay disciplined with your deep third responsibilities and do not bite on run fakes, since abandoning the deep zone here is what gets this coverage beaten over the top.

Call this on early downs or in obvious passing situations where you expect quick game or spot routes since the short zone drops close down underneath windows fast.
Pre-snap, check for empty or spread formations that stress the flat zones, since the three underneath defenders can get pulled horizontally and open seams up the middle.
Combine this with Cover 3 Hard Flat or Cover 3 Match in the same set to disguise your deep third rotation and keep quarterbacks guessing on where the flat defender sits.
Use motion adjustments to see if the defense shifts a flat defender, which tells you if you are getting true zone or a man match rotation underneath.
Pair this call with Edge Blitz 1 or Edge Blitz 2 later in a series so offenses cannot sit on the same underneath drop picture snap after snap.
