Cover 2 Sink is a zone coverage defense out of the Dime 2-3-6 Sam set that drops two deep safeties over the top while sinking the underneath defenders into passing lanes. The diagram shows both corners bailing into deep zones with the two deep safeties, while the underneath linebackers and slot defenders drop into hook, curl, and flat zones rather than sprinting vertically, creating a soft zone shell underneath the two deep safeties. Four rushers attack up front (shown by the red arrows) to generate pressure while seven defenders drop into coverage, making this a zone beater killer rather than a blitz-heavy call. The primary read for the defense is to sink the underneath zones first to take away shallow crossers and curls, then trust the two deep safeties to erase anything thrown over the top.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check corner depth and safety alignment: if both safeties are showing deep halves with corners playing off, you are likely in a good Cover 2 Sink look to bait underneath throws. Watch for user-controlled defenders lurking in the shallow hook and curl zones, since the sink technique is designed to jump slants, drags, and curl routes before they develop. Post-snap, key the deep safeties for any seam or vertical threat up the middle, since Cover 2 Sink can be exposed by a good seam route if the safeties are late reacting to underneath action first. This coverage struggles against strong four verticals or double moves that stress the deep safeties after they have already sunk to take away shorter routes. It excels against man beater route combos like slants and quick outs since the underneath defenders are sitting in those exact throwing lanes.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs or second and medium when you expect the offense to attack the flats or run shallow crossing routes, since the sink technique is designed to squeeze those throws. Pre-snap, identify if the offense is aligned to attack the deep middle or the seams, since Cover 2 Sink is vulnerable to the deep middle if your safeties get too aggressive jumping underneath routes. Use this play in sequence with Cover 2 Hard Flat and Cover 2 Man from the same set so the offense cannot key on your safety depth or corner leverage based on formation alone. Mix in Tampa 2 Spy occasionally out of this same personnel to disguise the middle of the field look while still protecting against crossing routes. Avoid calling this against heavy vertical stacks or four verticals concepts since the sink technique prioritizes underneath throws and can get beat deep if the safeties overcommit.
