Cover 3 Lock is a three deep, four under zone coverage built out of Dime Big personnel to defend against spread passing attacks. The diagram shows both deep outside defenders sinking vertically into deep thirds while the two inside underneath defenders (yellow zones) shuffle to the middle hook/curl areas, and the two purple zone defenders lock onto the widest receivers with man-match technique at the snap before working outside contain. Up front the three down linemen fire off the ball on a standard four man rush look, so the primary read for the defense starts with locking the outside receivers, then working from the deep middle third out to the flats as the underneath zone reads the quarterback's eyes.
Defensive Reads
Watch the safety alignment pre-snap, if both safeties are deep and the corners are pressed at the line, the offense likely expects zone drops rather than the man-match lock technique this play uses. Post-snap, key the underneath yellow zone defenders' initial shuffle, if they bail too quickly to the flats they leave the middle hook area exposed to crossing routes and drag concepts. This play shuts down comeback routes and quick game to the boundary because the lock corners jump the route stem immediately instead of waiting in a traditional zone drop. It is vulnerable to rub routes and pick concepts at the line of scrimmage since the locked defenders can get picked off by natural traffic before the ball is thrown. Look for tight end or slot seam routes attacking the void between the deep third defender and the underneath zone, this is the classic soft spot in any three deep, four under shell.
Usage Tips
Call this out of Dime Big Sam personnel when you expect 11 or 12 personnel spread sets, since the lock technique on the outside receivers takes away quick outs and slants that man beaters rely on.
Pre-snap, identify if the offense is running double moves or vertical stems from the slots, since your underneath zone defenders need to sink under those routes rather than biting on the first move.
Use this play on early downs or obvious pass downs against teams that live on three step drops and hitch routes to the boundary, since the corners locking in man coverage jump those routes immediately.
Pair this call with Cover 3 Hard Flat or Cover 3 Match in the same set to disguise your shell, showing the same Dime Big alignment pre-snap so the quarterback cannot key your coverage rotation before the snap.
Avoid calling this against heavy four verticals concepts unless your deep thirds defenders have elite speed, since the lock corners are isolated with no safety help over the top on double moves.
