Overload 3 Seam Press is a Cover 3 zone blitz out of the Dime 2-3-6 Sam set that sends five rushers with an overload look to one side while dropping the rest into a three deep, three under shell. The diagram shows three deep zone defenders (blue) bracketing the field with press alignment on the outside corners, a curl/flat defender to each side (purple), and a single hook/lurk defender (olive) sitting in the middle of the field to rob crossers. Underneath, the five man rush shows a heavy overload with three straight down rushers and two edge threats collapsing the pocket, making this a pressure zone beater designed to disrupt timing rather than a static coverage snap.
Pre-snap, identify which side the overload rush is coming from and widen your user control to that edge to close off the quick escape lane Watch for empty backfield or max protect looks, both tell you whether the offense plans to slide protection into the overload or leave it exposed Post-snap, track the running back's release, if he checks the overload side and stays in to block you have a numbers advantage at the point of attack The three deep zone defenders are vulnerable to seam routes if your lurk defender bites on underneath crossers too early, discipline in the middle hook is critical This dies against quick three step drops and hot route sight adjustments, if the quarterback is getting the ball out in under two seconds consider dropping into a standard Cover 3 instead
Call this on passing downs where you expect quick game or shotgun spread formations that struggle to identify overload protection sides
Check the offensive line splits and running back alignment pre-snap, if the back is set away from the overload side you get a free rusher almost every time
Use the lurk defender in the middle to sit on drag routes and shallow crossers that are the number one answer to five man pressure
Mix this with Cover 3 Hard Flat and Cover 1 Contain from the same set so quarterbacks cannot key blitz frequency off formation alone
Spy or user the deep middle third defender if you are worried about a hot throw beating the pressure before it gets home
