Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check the offensive formation for stacked or bunch receivers, since the slant direction should mirror the strength call to funnel blockers away from your rush lane. Post-snap, the deep middle safety should key the quarterback's shoulders and eyes to jump any deep in-cut or dig route trying to split the three deep zones. Watch the flat defenders' zone drops closely, since this play is vulnerable to fast flat-to-corner route combos if the underneath defenders bite too hard on the run action. This play shuts down man beater slant-flat combos and inside zone runs, but struggles against quick screens and RPO bubble concepts that attack the space vacated by the slanting front. If the offense shows empty backfield or four verticals, expect the deep thirds to get stressed, so be ready to user the deep middle defender to help over the top on the seam route.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs when you expect inside zone or gap runs, since the line slant closes rushing lanes fast and forces the ball outside into your flat defenders.
Use it against offenses that lean on quick game and slants, since the underneath zone defenders are already flowing toward those throwing windows.
Disguise the slant by aligning your front four normally pre-snap, then let the slant trigger at the snap so quarterbacks cannot get a pre-snap key on the blitz direction.
Pair this with Cover 3 Hard Flat or Cover 3 Lock in your play-calling sequence so offenses cannot key on the line slant tell and start guessing between static and slanting fronts.
Avoid calling this on third and long against spread formations, since the three deep defenders are stretched thin and a skilled user can exploit the seams before the slant gets home.
