Breakdown

Dbl Safety Go is a safety blitz out of the Dime 2-3-6 Sam set that brings both safeties off the edges while dropping four defenders underneath into a shallow spot drop shell. The two outside linebacker/DE alignments crash hard off the edge as blitzers while the two safeties (shown as squares) fold underneath into short hook zones, creating a five man rush look with a soft underneath robber shell. This is a blitz designed to beat man and quick game concepts by overwhelming the offensive tackles with numbers off the edge, and the primary read is to fire off the snap and win the edge before the quarterback can get through his first progression.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify the number of pass protectors, this blitz loses value against max protect looks with seven or eight blockers. Watch running back alignment, if the back is releasing to the flat immediately he can beat the underneath hook defenders on a checkdown before the rush arrives. Post-snap, user the short hook defender to rob any in-breaking route since that zone is thin and the quickest answer to this blitz. This beats empty and spread shotgun sets that rely on hot reads since the edge rush forces an immediate decision before hots develop. It gets exposed by quick game to the perimeter like bubble screens or stick concepts run away from the blitz side, so respect formation strength before calling it.

Usage Tips

Call this on passing downs where you expect quick game or shotgun spread formations that struggle to identify extra edge rushers before the snap.

Check the offensive line protection pre-snap, if you see six or seven blockers stay in, audible out since your numbers advantage disappears.

Use the short hook defenders underneath to squeeze slants and shallow crossers, they are there to rob the quick throw while the edge rushers get home.

Mix this with Edge Blitz 1 and Edge Blitz 2 from the same set so quarterbacks cannot key on one specific pressure shape from Dime 2-3-6 Sam.

Best used on third and medium to third and long when the offense is likely to hold protection for a deeper developing route, giving your rush time to close.
