Hot Blitz 3 out of the 1-4 Dbl Mug set in Dime is a Cover 3 zone blitz built to bring pressure while still rolling into a three deep, four under shell behind it. The two outside corners drop straight down into deep thirds, the deep middle defender bends across to the opposite side to cap the seam, and both underneath zone defenders sit short (the crosser to the flat and the seam sitter working the middle hook) to clean up shallow crossers and drag routes. Up front, five rushers are marked with the down arrow blitz key, showing an overload rush design meant to collapse the pocket before the quarterback can climb through his first read, so the primary progression for the offense facing this is to attack the underneath voids quickly (shallow drag, then check to any leaking backfield or hot route option) before the deep thirds compress.
Presnap, check for two high safeties shifting late since that indicates the offense expects zone and may attack the deep thirds with double moves or go routes. Watch the running back and tight end release patterns immediately after the snap, since Hot Blitz 3 is vulnerable to check release protection that picks up the extra rusher and buys time for a deep shot. If the offense audibles to a screen game or quick RPO with bubble concepts, the zone blitz can be gashed because the underneath defenders are already rotating away from the box at the snap. Key the quarterback eyes after the snap. If he is looking to the shallow crosser or flat immediately, trust the underneath zone drop to close that window rather than jumping the route early. This call is shut down by max protect empty formations or offenses that quickly identify the overload side and slide protection, since the blitz timing depends on winning one on one on the overload edge.
Use this against offenses that love quick game and shallow crosser concepts because the zone drops underneath are designed to funnel that traffic into the blitz timing.
Pre-snap, identify if the offense is in shotgun spread with three or more receivers, since Hot Blitz 3 out of Dime personnel matches up best against 10 and 11 personnel spread looks.
Bring the user controlled defender down as an extra spy or lurk defender over the shallow crosser zone since that is the area most quarterbacks try to exploit against zone blitzes.
Pair this call with Cover 3 Sky or Cover 3 Match earlier in a series so the offense sees a similar three deep shell presnap and cannot key the blitz off alignment alone.
Best used on third and medium to third and long when the offense is more likely to hold the ball for a deeper concept, giving your rush extra time to affect the pocket.
Avoid calling this into empty backfield sets since the extra blocker released into the route concept can identify and pick up the overload rush before it gets home.
