SS Mid Blitz 3 is a five-man pressure package out of the 1-4 Dbl Mug look in Dime that sends the strong safety on a delayed mid blitz through the A or B gap while dropping into a Cover 3 shell behind it. The double mug alignment disguises which linebacker or defensive back is actually rushing, forcing the quarterback to guess protection assignments pre-snap. Underneath, the defense rolls into three deep zones with shallow curl and hook drops, so the primary read is the interior rush getting home before the quarterback can climb the pocket or find the seam window against the three deep defenders.
Watch for hot route conversions on slot receivers immediately after the snap, since quick game beats the delayed blitz timing before the rush arrives. Key the running back's release pattern, if he stays in to chip or block the rush lane is exposed and man beaters underneath become dangerous. Identify empty or spread formations pre-snap, since five or six eligible receivers can overload the three deep zones and create a natural window for a crosser or dig. Trust the underneath zone defenders to sink into throwing lanes rather than chasing receivers, since the play is designed to bait quick throws into the blitz. This call gets beaten by quick out and slant combinations to the flat and by rollout play-action that lets the quarterback escape the interior pressure to the edge.
Disguise the strong safety blitz by showing double mug pre-snap and delay the walk-up until just before the snap so the offensive line cannot get a clean protection call.
Use this on third and medium or third and long when offenses are more likely to run five-man protection or a max protect play-action, since the extra rusher exploits slower drops.
Pair this with SS Mid Blitz 0 in the same set so the offense cannot key on whether the deep coverage is three-deep or man free based on the blitz look.
If the user rushes the strong safety, spy the running back out of the backfield with a linebacker to prevent the checkdown from beating the pressure.
Mix in Cover 3 Sky or Cover 3 Match from this set on early downs to keep the same shell disguise while saving the all-out blitz call for a passing down.
