Breakdown

FS Slant 3 is a Cover 3 zone blitz look out of the 3-4 Under 4t front with Base 5-2 personnel. The diagram shows the defensive line slanting hard to one side with the red arrows, three deep thirds covered by the corners and free safety, and underneath the strong safety and Mike linebacker working the flat and hook zones while the will linebacker drops into a shallow curl or spy zone. This is a zone beater package designed to disguise where the extra rush or drop is coming from, with the primary read progression starting at the deep middle third (free safety) before working down to the underneath flat defenders to diagnose the line slant direction.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check if the offense is aligned with two backs or heavy run personnel since the slant is built to gain leverage against gap runs and stretch plays. Watch the running back's initial step after the snap, if he presses the slant side hard, trust your run fits since the line is shooting gaps in that direction. Post-snap, key the quarterback's eyes to the deep middle third, if he holds the free safety with a shot route you need to stay disciplined and not bite on shorter routes underneath. This beats teams that rely on quick game to the slant side since the line movement disrupts passing lanes and forces the quarterback to reset his platform. Cover 3 beaters like flood concepts or deep out and go combinations to the opposite hash from the slant can stress this call, so be ready to bail into your deep third quickly if you see three verticals stacked away from the slant.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs when you expect a run or a quick play-action pass since the line slant is built to blow up gap schemes and outside zone runs.

Check the pre-snap alignment of the slot corner and strong safety to confirm this is a true three deep shell before committing to the call, since offenses will try to attack the slant side with quick outs or bubble screens.

Pair this with Cover 3 Hard Flat or Cover 3 Sky in the same set to disguise the slant direction and keep quarterbacks guessing on which side the underneath defenders are rolling to.

User the Mike linebacker to rob the intermediate crossing routes since the zone slant naturally opens a throwing lane behind the linemen if you sit in a passive zone drop.

Call this on second and long or third and medium when you want the line slant to disrupt screen game and delayed draws while still holding three deep zones against verticals.
