Cover 6 out of the Under 4t set is a zone coverage shell that splits the field into quarters to one side and halves to the other, giving the defense a natural boundary/field adjustment. The diagram shows three deep defenders dropping into vertical zone landmarks while the underneath four defenders (the red arrows) sink into short and intermediate zone drops, with one flat defender sliding outside to wall off the boundary. This is a zone beater killer for offenses trying to attack seams and flats, since it combines quarters coverage strength on one side with two deep coverage on the other, forcing the quarterback to identify which half of the field is playing quarters versus halves before the snap.
Watch for two-back sets or tight bunch formations to the halves side, since that is where offenses will try to overload the coverage with three-level route combos. Post-snap, key the quarterback's eyes toward the quarters side first, since that safety has more run support responsibility and can be late getting to a deep vertical route if he steps up. This shell shuts down deep out routes and corner routes to the halves side because of the two-deep safety help, so expect offenses to check into quick game or hitch routes instead. If you see the offense trying to stress the flat with speed motion, get ready to sink your underneath flat defender immediately at the snap rather than reading run first. Man beater route combos, especially double moves designed to attack single high coverage, will not work well here since this is a zone shell, so respect it against teams that spam man beater concepts.
Pre-snap, identify the strength call and note which side of the field is getting the quarters treatment versus the two-deep half, since offenses often attack the halves side with double moves or deep out routes.
Use this call on early downs when you want to stay disciplined against balanced formations, since Cover 6 gives you run support from the safety on the quarters side while still protecting explosive plays on the halves side.
Combine Cover 6 with Cover 3 Sky and Cover 4 Quarters from this same set so your pre-snap shells look identical, making it harder for the offense to diagnose the coverage before the ball is snapped.
User the flat defender manually on passing downs to jump underneath routes and bait the quarterback into throwing to the boundary flat, since the CPU AI can be late getting there in this zone drop.
Avoid calling this against heavy motion offenses that flood one side, since the halves rotation can get outnumbered if you do not adjust your alignment pre-snap.
