Cover 4 Quarters out of the 3-4 Over Base 5-2 shows a two-deep, five-under zone shell with all four deep defenders (two corners and two safeties) reading vertical stems from the outside receivers before sinking into their quarter zones. The two inside linebackers hold hook/curl zones while the underneath corners jam and carry any vertical release before passing off to the safety, and the middle linebacker walls off the deep middle read. This is a pure zone coverage call designed to take away four verticals and deep shots, forcing the quarterback to check down underneath where the five defenders in the shallow zone are waiting on the primary read progression: quarters help over verticals first, then curl-flat and hook zones underneath.
Defensive Reads
Post-snap, key both safeties for outside vertical stems; if a receiver runs a true vertical route past ten yards, expect the safety to lock on and carry him deep with no help over the top elsewhere. This shell is strong against four verticals, go routes, and deep out and up combinations because both corners and safeties have deep help within their quarter. It is vulnerable underneath to shallow crossers, drag routes, and quick slants that sit in the seams between the five underneath zone defenders, so watch for offenses attacking the flat and hook areas with three-step concepts. Pre-snap, if the offense lines up with tight bunch or stack formations, watch for pick concepts designed to rub off underneath zone defenders and create separation before the safety can rotate over. Blitz packages that pull a linebacker out of coverage will open up a soft spot underneath, so use user control on a linebacker to jump likely hook or curl routes if you see the offense audible into a quick-game passing concept.
Usage Tips
Use this call on third and medium or third and long when you expect the offense to test the deep middle or run four verticals against you.
Pre-snap, check receiver splits and stack alignments; if the offense shows a bunch or stack on one side, be ready to spot rotate a safety down to help the corner on vertical routes.
Hot route the underneath linebackers into deeper hook zones if you are seeing a lot of seam and dig combinations, since Cover 4 is naturally vulnerable to underneath sit routes.
Pair this play with Cover 3 Sky or Cover 3 Match in your play-calling sequence so the offense cannot key deep safety rotation presnap and has to guess between three-deep and four-deep shells.
Bring Cover 4 Quarters back after showing Saw Blitz 1 or SS Blitz 1 earlier in a series, since quarterbacks who got beat deep by pressure will often force a vertical shot right into this coverage.
