Breakdown

Cover 6 Press is a split-field zone coverage out of the 3-4 Over Base 5-2 personnel, blending quarters to one side with a sky/cloud look to the other. The diagram shows press alignment on both outside corners with the boundary corner locked in man-match technique while the field side corner sits in a quarter zone alongside the safety over the top. Underneath, the four defenders (two OLBs, MLB, and the strong safety in the flat) drop into their landmarks off the snap, creating a two-deep, five-under shell that squeezes intermediate crossers and flat routes. This is a zone beater killer designed to take away quick game and RPO reads, so the primary progression for the offense facing it is to attack the seams and boundary hitch/curl combos before the safeties can rotate down.

Defensive Reads

Watch the boundary corner press alignment pre-snap, if the receiver runs a hard release inside he is likely trying to beat man coverage on a slant or dig, so squeeze the throwing lane immediately. Key the strong safety depth in the flat, if he sits too shallow the offense will attack the deep quarter with a corner or post route behind him. Post-snap, identify any receiver working across the middle of the field, the MLB and OLB zone drops are designed to wall off crossers, so use the flick stick to jump the route if you see the quarterback's eyes come to that side. This shell struggles against four verticals into the quarter zone, if both safeties get high-lowed by a seam and a corner route on the same side, expect a explosive completion unless the deep defender stays disciplined. Look for offenses running mesh or shallow cross concepts underneath, since the press corners can be picked off at the line, leaving the underneath zone defenders responsible for a two-way go they may not win consistently.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs when you expect play-action or boot concepts since the press corners disrupt route timing at the top of the stem.

Check pre-snap for stacked or bunch formations, if the offense bunches to the field side, roll your safety help there and let the boundary corner play press-man alone.

Use this play in sequence with Cover 3 Sky or Cover 3 Buzz Mike to disguise your shell, since all three start from similar alignment but rotate differently post-snap.

Hot route your strong safety into a deeper flat drop against teams that live on quick out and speed out throws, this closes the window before the ball is out.

Pair this call with Saw Blitz 1 or SS Blitz 1 on third-and-medium to keep offenses guessing between a five-under zone drop and a pressure package from the same personnel grouping.
