Defensive Reads
Pre snap check safety depth, if both safeties are sitting at depth in a true two high shell this play is live and disguised well. Watch for the offense sliding protection or checking to a hot route toward the Olb alignment, that usually means they read the blitz before the snap. Post snap key the shallow hole defender, if a tight end or running back tries to sit in that middle void the linebacker dropping there should be there to close the window. This zone blitz gets exploited by quick slants and levels concepts that attack the seam between the flat defender and the deep half safety, so user the safety to help close that throwing lane if you see it developing. Against play action rollouts the Olb rush can get washed out of the backfield, so be ready to spy or contain if the quarterback escapes the pocket to the blitz side.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs or third and medium when you expect a quick game passing attack that wants to attack the flats or shallow crossers. Disguise the blitz by showing a two high shell pre snap and delay the Olb rush trigger so quarterbacks cannot get a pre snap alert on the pressure. Use the flat defenders to squeeze bubble screens and speed outs since they sit right in those throwing lanes. Pair this with Cover 2 Invert or Cover 2 Invert Hard Flat from the same set so you can show the same shell but rotate coverage responsibilities and keep opposing quarterbacks guessing. Bail out of this call against empty formations or when you see three plus receivers releasing quickly to the same side, since the interior zone can get outnumbered on quick combo routes.
