Breakdown

Saw Blitz 1 out of the 3-4 Over Base 5-2 personnel is a Cover 1 man blitz that brings extra pressure while leaving a single deep safety over the top. The diagram shows four down defenders driving hard downhill at diagonal angles off the snap, indicating a coordinated blitz through interior gaps, with the two inside linebackers sitting behind them as spy or late-arriving rushers. Cornerbacks and the underneath defender are locked in man coverage across the formation with one deep safety playing centerfield, making this a pressure package designed to disrupt timing routes and force a quick, inaccurate throw before protection can pick up the extra rushers.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the offense has a running back staying in to block, since that back can pick up one of your extra rushers and neutralize the blitz. Check receiver splits and depth of the slot or tight end, since quick option routes and slants are the primary answer to this blitz and your man defenders need to play tight technique to avoid the free access at the line. Post-snap, watch for the single deep safety getting stressed by a vertical route on the backside, since Cover 1 only has one defender deep and no help over the top. This call is vulnerable to hot route conversions to hitches and quick outs, so key on receivers breaking off their stems immediately after the snap as a sign the offense diagnosed the blitz. Against play-action, this blitz can be baited into overcommitting, so if the offensive line shows pass-block set but the running back fakes an inside run path, trust your pass rush lanes and do not bite on the fake.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs or short yardage situations where you expect a quick-game passing concept, since the blitz timing wins before deep routes develop.

Check the offensive personnel and formation width before the snap. If they show a spread empty look with no running back to chip, user the most dangerous rusher and let the CPU AI handle the rest of the blitz assignments.

Use your user-controlled defender to spy the quarterback on mobile QBs or to jump the shortest route in the concept, since Cover 1 leaves no safety help underneath.

Pair this call with Cover 1 Hole in your play-calling sequence so offenses cannot sit comfortably against man coverage, since Cover 1 Hole gives you a robber underneath while Saw Blitz 1 sells pure pressure.

Avoid calling this against empty formations with quick slot releases unless you have elite man corners, since the extra rushers leave your coverage isolated on islands.
