Slot Blitz 3 is a five-man pressure package out of the Penny 3-3-5 that drops into Cover 3 behind the rush. Both outside linebackers crash off the edges as blitzers while the slot corner over the flexed TE side flips to a man leverage route wheel underneath, and the boundary corner sits low to jump the shallow crosser. Underneath, the Mike drops to the deep middle third alongside the two deep safeties over the top, so it plays as a zone beater against sight-adjust hot routes but is vulnerable to any quick game that attacks the vacated hook areas the instant the extra rushers leave. Primary read progression: identify the free rusher off the edge first, then work void areas over the middle of the field created by the blitzing linebackers.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth. Two deep safeties holding at depth confirms the Cover 3 shell rotation behind the blitz. Watch the slot corner alignment over the flexed receiver. If he is shaded inside with outside leverage, he is keying a wheel or arrow route breaking to the flat. Post-snap, key the Mike linebacker's drop. He is responsible for the deep middle third, so any tight end sitting down in that void is your first alert for a lurk opportunity. This beats quick game and shallow crossers thrown into the flat since the corner is sitting on those routes, but it can be exposed by any protection that picks up all five rushers and lets the quarterback climb the pocket into the vacated hook zones. Watch for user-controlled receivers working away from the blitzing linebackers immediately after the snap, since the underside zones are thinnest right where the edge rushers vacated.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs or 3rd and medium when you want a disguised five-man pressure without fully abandoning three-deep coverage integrity.
Check the offensive protection pre-snap. If the offense shows max protect or a heavy TE set, this blitz can get picked up and you will be stuck in a soft zone shell with no extra rush lanes.
Hot route the slot corner into a tighter man mirror if you see the offense running natural rub routes designed to pick off the flat defender.
Pair this with Cover 3 Sky or Cover 3 Buzz on early downs to disguise the same shell before bringing Slot Blitz 3 on a passing down, keeping the quarterback guessing on where the extra rusher comes from.
Avoid calling this on obvious deep shot downs since the middle of the field is thinned out and a good vertical read can exploit the seam behind the blitzing linebackers.
