The three defenders at the line cross and stunt through the interior gaps to create chaos up front, with the middle linebacker area sinking to a shallow zone drop and the two purple defenders bailing into deep thirds on the perimeter. The blue defenders funnel underneath, giving you a true zone blitz look designed to disguise pressure while still playing sound zone coverage behind it. This is a blitz beater killer against teams that hold the ball or throw quick game, since the underneath zone defenders can rally to any hot route while the corners create free rushers off the edge.
Defensive Reads
Watch for the offense sliding protection toward the blitzing corner side, which tells you they read the pressure and you should expect a quick throw to the opposite flat. If the quarterback checks to a bubble screen or quick out toward the blitzing corner, your underneath zone defenders need to close fast since the corner is out of position in run support. This play struggles against empty formations with a true five wide route distribution, since the interior stunt can be picked up cleanly and the corners get held up by receivers running option routes at the line. Post-snap, key the middle linebacker zone drop to see if it can undercut any shallow crossing routes or check releases from running backs, since that is often the first outlet against zone pressure. Cover 3 beaters like flood concepts to the blitzing corner's side can expose this play, so if you see three receivers stacked to one side pre-snap, consider bailing that corner into a deep third instead of sending him on the blitz.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs or second and medium when you expect the offense to run play action or hold the ball for a deep shot, since the disguised corner pressure forces quick decisions.
Pre-snap, check if the offense has trips or bunch formations that can pick off your corner blitz path with natural rub routes, and consider audibling to a different blitz if so.
Use the flick up or defensive shift to bluff the corner blitz look before the snap, then bail one corner into a deep third if you read a screen or quick out to that side.
Pair this with Cover 3 Sky or Cover 3 Buzz from the same set so your pre-snap disguise stays consistent, making it harder for the offense to key on which play is coming based on your alignment.
Against spread formations with four verticals or trips concepts, be ready to user the underneath zone defender and jump the shallow crosser since the corners are committed to the rush and cannot help over the top.
