Breakdown

Hot Blitz 3 is a five-man pressure package out of the Penny 3-3-5 Big Nickel look that drops into Cover 3 zone behind the rush. Both deep outside corners run vertical zone drops to the sidelines while the middle deep defender bails to the deep third, giving you a three deep, three under shell despite sending extra numbers. The two underneath zone defenders sit shallow, one flowing to a hook/curl area and the other working the drag/flat window, so the primary post-snap read is the deep middle third, then working down to the underneath crossers if the quarterback holds the ball. This is a zone blitz beater against man and drag concepts, not a run play or play-action call.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and corner alignment: if both corners are aligned deep off the line, the offense may be expecting standard Cover 3 and won't account for the extra rusher. Key the running back and tight end release, since drag routes and check-down routes crossing into the shallow zone are exactly what the two underneath zone defenders are sitting on. Watch for hot route sight adjustments from slot receivers, since quick out or speed out routes into the flat can beat the underneath zone if the defender is late peeling from his blitz fake. This beats man concepts and drag or shallow cross combos because the extra rusher disrupts timing before receivers clear the underneath zone. This gets exposed by four vertical stacks or seam routes attacking the deep middle third, since only one deep defender covers that entire zone once the blitz commits extra bodies forward.

Usage Tips

Call this on third and medium to third and long when you expect the offense to attack with quick game or shallow crossers, since the underneath zone defenders are sitting right in those throwing lanes.

Use pre-snap motion checks to confirm the offense is not running a heavy trips or bunch look that can overload the shallow zone droppers, since Hot Blitz 3 only has two true underneath defenders.

Bait the quarterback by showing a normal Cover 3 shell pre-snap, then let the extra rusher get home before the drag route develops, especially against offenses that love hitting the flat or drag as a hot route answer to pressure.

Pair this with Cover 3 Sky or Cover 3 Buzz from the same set so opposing quarterbacks cannot key on the deep thirds rotation, since Hot Blitz 3 disguises pressure behind a similar shell.

Sequence Hot Blitz 3 after running Mike Blitz 1 or Saw Blitz 1 earlier in the drive so the offensive line has to respect interior pressure, making the added rusher here even more disruptive off the play clock.
