3 Double Cloud is a Cover 3 Cloud zone coverage call out of the Penny 3 High shell in the 3-3-5 Nickel 5-1-5 personnel. The diagram shows both cornerbacks sinking into cloud (curl-flat) zones underneath while the three deep defenders (two safeties and the slot corner or overhang) rotate into deep thirds, with the three underneath linebackers dropping into short zones and spying the middle red arrows showing the interior rush lanes. This is a zone beater coverage designed to squeeze the flats and curl areas, taking away quick out routes and hitches while still protecting over the top against verticals. Primary read progression for the defense is deep third integrity first, then react to the flat/curl combo underneath since the corners are rolled up to jump quick game before retreating.
Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment since Penny 3 High tips a three-deep shell, and offenses will look to attack the seams between the deep thirds. Watch cornerback press or off alignment: if they are sitting closer to the line, expect them to jump the cloud flat zone hard on snap, so man beaters with quick outs get taken away. Post-snap, key the linebacker drops in the shallow middle zone since that is where crossing routes and drag concepts try to sit down against the underneath cushion. This coverage shuts down quick game, flat routes, and shallow crossers, but it is exposed to deep out routes and corner routes thrown to the void just outside the cloud corner's zone. Look for user-controlled lurk defenders sitting in the throwing lanes on in-cuts, since a smart defender can bait quarterbacks into checkdowns and jump the route.
Call this on early downs or third and medium when you expect the offense to attack the flats with quick game since the cloud corners are sitting on those routes.
Pre-snap, identify if the offense is in a stack or bunch formation to the field side, since cloud coverage is vulnerable to natural picks that clear out the flat defender.
Use the flat corners aggressively against WR screens and hitches, but stay alert for double moves since the corner has to fight through the initial route before recovering deep.
Pair this call with 3 Double Buzz in your play-calling sequence so offenses cannot key on which underneath zone (flat vs curl-hook) is getting squeezed presnap.
Avoid this call against heavy vertical stacks or verts concepts since the deep third safeties can get outnumbered if the offense sends four receivers vertical.
