Nickel 5-1-5 is a defensive personnel group that fields five defensive linemen (two DEs and three interior DTs), a single MLB, and five defensive backs (three CBs plus a FS and an SS), which is why it only surfaces in exotic fronts like 3-3-5 Penny 3 High where linemen are aligned off the ball as walked-up rushers. The identity is pass rush volume with nickel coverage behind it: you keep an extra defensive back on the field to handle 11 and 10 personnel, but replace the second and third linebacker with pure pass rushers who can either come or bail into a three-high shell. Offenses have to re-solve protection every snap because they cannot tell which of the five linemen is dropping, and their center has to make a mike point on a front that only has one true linebacker, which is what pulls RB and TE chip assignments away from the route tree.
